Just came across this article in The Atlantic. A real eye-opener.

I... guess I've always known those things were plastic? I mean, all you have to do is touch one, or give it a two-second glance; nobody's going to make a teabag out of actual silk (hello expensive, also worm-made products are a "no" in drinks), so...?

Probably doesn't hurt that I've actually taken them apart and reused them, either; that'd have made me realise what they were even if I hadn't noticed at first. (Never really bothered me to reuse a plastic item in a hot liquid, I guess because three tiny sachets to an entire pot seemed pretty reasonable as far as potential contaminants go.) I mainly dislike them because they're not compostable, and I like being able to just toss my used teabags (or loose-leaf dregs) into the shrubbery.

Several years ago I bought some reusable organic cotton teabags for use with loose-leaf teas, and they have been the best and most convenient tea thing I have ever bought. They cost $.25 each, and I've been using the same ones for about three years now (I have bought others to supplement them). The cotton does slowly discolour, but it doesn't seem to affect the taste of the tea. (I clean them after each, or every other, use with a tiny dab of dish soap or a scrub with baking soda.)
